Rural Recycling Cooperative

Since 1994, KTR’s main focus has been cooperative opportunities for recycling in rural and underserved communities.

Currently, KTR has 55+ entities within the cooperative that includes civic groups, private industry, military bases, government entities, and school districts. Members of the cooperative benefit from KTR’s services which include:

  • Consultation on the implementation or improvement of a recycling program
  • Contract negotiations with end-markets, community outreach
  • Grant writing services

In the last 28 years KTR members have recycled over 310 million pounds of material. This has generated over $11.4 million in revenue for these communities and saved 500,000 cubic yards of landfill space and over $5.5 million in landfill fees!

Strategic Projects

KTR has worked with a variety of entities to increase recycling opportunities.

This work has focused on specific commodities, hard-to-recycle items and how to improve current recycling operations through proven efficiency strategies. Projects also include public awareness campaigns focused on increasing volume of items recycled and decreasing contamination. Partnerships between national organizations, brands and government entities have helped KTR expand collection sites and items collected at these sites, which has been vital to increasing recycling access in Texas.

Technical Assistance

KTR provides technical assistance throughout the state of Texas, to any and all communities and groups interested in recycling.

The majority of this work is done through public workshops, training and webinars to reach a larger audience but can include site visits and individual consulting services, often crucial to understanding the needs of each community.

This assistance typically includes recycling education, staff training, market assistance and capacity building. KTR has been invited to advise and work with groups in the following places:

  • Oklahoma
  • New Mexico
  • Colorado
  • Wyoming
  • Montana
  • and even Alberta, Canada!

The Texas Environmental Excellence Awards is an annual awards program that honors achievements in environmental preservation and protection with ten award categories that provide citizens, communities, businesses, and organizations an opportunity to obtain the state’s highest environmental honor and be recognized for their environmental projects.
