March 20 marks the first official day of spring! Along with the beautiful weather, comes the age old tradition of spring cleaning. Spring cleaning can apply to many aspects of your life and serves as a great excuse to get motivated and organized.
Here at KTB, spring is also when most of our community cleanups are held. We offer a number of opportunities to get involved in your community and extend that spring cleaning mentality into your local community.
In March through May, Keep America Beautiful puts on the Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program. Cleanup activities can include beautifying parks and recreation areas, picking up litter, removing graffiti, planting trees, or anything that involves keeping your community beautiful! We help put on this event and provide you with tips and tools to get involved, here.
We also help organize the Don’t mess with Texas Trash-Off, in partnership with TxDOT. This event takes place in April and focuses on keeping Texas roadways clean. Find helpful information on planning a trash-off, here.
Lastly, we host the Keep Texas Waterways Clean (KWTC) program in partnership with HEB and Central market. This event can take place any time of year, but spring offers beautiful weather and (hopefully) flowing waters! Anyone within a 30 miles radius of an HEB can host a KTWC event. Learn more about it, here.
In addition to getting involved in our cleanup programs, there are many ways you can enhance your environment through your own spring cleaning habits. Whether your sprucing up your backyard garden, washing your car or doing a thorough clean of your house, there’s an opportunity for you to improve the impact you have on the environment!
We suggest you use eco-friendly cleaning products or create your own cleaning products that are guaranteed to be non-toxic and safe for the environment. Check out this article for DIY recipes. We also suggest not using paper towels and conserving water where you can.
Another important habit is to REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE whenever possible. You can reduce by getting rid of any unwanted items you no longer use or need. Reuse by donating those old, unwanted items so that someone else can find use of them. Also, think creativity in ways to re-purpose those old items – maybe those old socks you’re throwing out can become new and useful dust rags! Lastly, recycle and dispose of items properly. Do a quick google search to see what materials your city collects and where you can drop them off. Check out the EPA’s tips and tricks to reduce, reuse and recycle.
