Tom Nurre, Sr.
Tom Nurre, Sr. is well known around San Angelo for never saying “no” to a beautification or recycling effort. His passion for working tirelessly for all things recycling has made San Angelo a nicer, cleaner place to live.
Tom joined the Keep San Angelo Beautiful (KSAB) board in 2004 after serving on a local senior citizen advocacy board. Since then he has logged more than 200 volunteer hours each year in the community. He has been instrumental in coordinating city-wide cleanups, waterway and park beautification projects, as well as a variety of Students for Recycling programs. He served as KSAB board President from 2005 – 2008.
In 2005, he worked with local business partners to purchase a trailer which volunteers pull behind a pickup and use to pick up trash and other debris to haul to the landfill for community senior and disabled citizens. It is also used to help city code enforcement cleanups on weekends. This provides an invaluable service to seniors and disabled persons in San Angelo. Partnership with the trailer has expanded and now includes sponsor businesses logos on the sides of the trailer to raise additional monies. Sponsor donations, which are renewed annually, are used to purchase large trash bags, bottled water for volunteers, to pay some dumping fees for seniors and disabled, and advertising for community recycling efforts.
Tom has also been involved with the Downtown San Angelo Board which strives to enhance the economic heart of the city. He worked with a local restaurant to place receptacles for cigarette butts in front of his eatery and all along Chadbourne Street. These receptacles have made a tremendous difference in sidewalk cleanliness. Tom also coordinated Keep San Angelo Beautiful volunteers to assist in prep work for the painting of murals on historic buildings downtown. These murals enhance the beauty of the downtown area and draw visitors and locals to the streets to shop and eat.
After serving more than 30 years in the United States Air Force, Tom retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1994. It was natural then that he would serve as the liaison with Good Fellow Air Force Base. Since his affiliation with KSAB, he has coordinated hundreds of service members stationed at Goodfellow AFB to assist with city cleanup efforts. Their support has made the difference in many events and won Goodfellow AFB top honors in the KTB Government Awards Category.
Following his retirement in 1994, he organized and became an instructor for a Junior ROTC program at a local San Angelo High School. He also spent ten years in the furniture reupholstery business. Today, at 66, Tom doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Since 2008, he and his wife Kitty have divided their time with family between San Angelo and Colorado Springs. In his part-time capacity, he still is a tremendous asset to the community and seems to come back to town just in time to help out with the latest cleanup effort.
